In and Around the UWTSD Carmarthen Campus

When thinking about how I felt when I first started at the UWTSD Carmarthen campus, it was completely different to my usual surroundings. I didn’t have any idea of where Carmarthen was and what it would be like when I arrived. Actually, I suppose I did have a little idea as I Google mapped it and went down ‘college road’ to see what the campus looked like. I unfortunately wasn’t able to make an open day but once I arrived I got to know the place pretty quickly.

The Carmarthen campus itself has a great mixture of old and new buildings. I found that this was really interesting as it offers history along with the modern essentials required for class and learning. The campus itself has great facilities such as the sport centre, swimming pool, apple computer suites, Starbucks, quiet study rooms and much more! Being a small campus you soon get to know the staff working in these areas, the majority of them know you by name, which doesn’t necessarily happen on larger campuses.

The campus itself is situated rather close to large supermarkets. This makes it easy to walk to get your weekly groceries or even quicker if you take a car! The same goes for the town centre, the main shopping precinct is about a 15minute walk from the Carmarthen campus. To my surprise there was actually quite a variety of shops and department stores where you can find everything you need without having to travel to Swansea or Cardiff. There are also plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes and fast food outlets that can cater for everyone. A classic student hang out would be the VUE cinema that is open all week offering the all-important student discount!

If you have a car or willing to take the bus/train you are able to travel a little further to locations such as Llansteffan beach. This is a popular area for UWTSD students to hang out on a warm day. There is plenty to see and long beaches to walk along with the castle on top of the hill. Moving westwards you can also go for fish & chips at Tenby, a beautiful seaside town with great beaches and views too, its also a pretty neat spot to see the sunset, so bring your camera.
