A discussion on the LGBT+ Scene at UWTSD Carmarthen by Amy Colleen, MA Outdoor Education

Starting at a new university can be quite a daunting move, especially if you aren’t sure of what the LGBT+ scene will be like at your University, if there even is a scene. It is also however the time at which many feel ready and brave enough to ‘come out’ and be who they want to be. In my first year of UWTSD, I felt like the only LGBT+ student for a long time. I didn’t know any others for quite a while into the year and I didn’t like that at all. However, with the help of a couple of others, I set out to change that, helping establish what we know now as the official UWTSD LGBT+ Society, Carmarthen.

Although the society is still quite small, with the drive and dedication of its members there have been many successful events such as Spirit Day, World Aids Day, Harvey Milk Celebrations, Holocaust Memorial Day, Mental Health Awareness Day, International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, Safe Sex campaigns, Varsity Rainbow Laces campaigns and more.

The society also host a wide range of regular social events too, from Beach BBQ’s to Steak Club Nights, Lazer Tag to Domino’s Pizza Movie Nights, Theatre Shows to Pub Quiz’s, Pre-Drinks Gatherings to Coffee Mornings! The society essentially provides opportunities to socialise with likeminded people, get involved with fundraising and spreading awareness about key LGBT+ topics, as well as helping to act as a support network for students.

In 2015, UWTSD LGBT+ Society won the Society of the Year award from TSDSU, and in 2016 won the National Union of Students’ (NUS) LGBT+ Society Development award, recognising how far UWTSD LGBT+ have come over the past year or two. However, the BEST part about UWTSD LGBT+ is that it is for ANYONE, it doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, how old you are or how you identify. You don’t have to identify as LGBT+ to join, being a supporter is just as good!

The Facebook group is the main point of contact for members, where regular discussions, events and campaigns are advertised and so on, however the group is currently set to ‘Secret’ to avoid any unwanted questions for anyone belonging to the group. If you’d like to join you can either email UwtsdLGBTSoc@gmail.com or just search @UWTSDLGBT!
